Roland announces larger,
 faster UV-LED inkjet printer/cutter

Roland DGA Corp. today introduced the 54” VersaUV LEC-540 UV-LED wide-format inkjet printer/cutter. Based on award-winning VersaUV technology, the LEC-540 prints CMYK + White + Clear and contour cuts virtually any substrate up to 1 mm (0.04”) thick for luxurious, custom graphics with unique special effects and finishes.
“The LEC-540 is based on low-cost VersaUV technology that has revolutionized the packaging prototype and short run label industries,” said Hiroshi Ono, product manager for Roland DGA Corp. “With the new LEC-540, professionals can print, contour cut, crease and perforate graphics all on one device.  The LEC-540 prints on an unprecedented range of materials including popular large-format media. New built-in front and back tables facilitate the handling of rigid substrates for folding cartons and other packaging prototypes.”
The new LEC-540 is the third model in Roland’s VersaUV series. It is faster than previous VersaUV models and offers greater versatility for applications ranging from packaging prototypes, short-run labels and membrane panels to interior décor items, point of purchase (POP) displays and large-format window graphics.
The LEC-540 prints on a wide variety of flexible and rigid media, including synthetic paper, polyester film, paper and vinyl banner media, PET, leather, plastic, polycarbonates and paper boards.  In high quality mode, the LEC-540 prints 25 percent faster than the 30” LEC-330 due to new larger UV-LED lamps that expedite production. LEC-540 lamps automatically reposition themselves for high-speed performance and the highest image quality in all print modes. The LEC-540 also offers high-quality artistic print mode (1440 x 1440 dpi) for images that rival offset and gravure print quality.
The LEC-540 is offered in three ink configurations: the standard CMYK + White + Clear configuration, CMYK + White + White for high-opacity white printing on transparent films, and CMYK + Clear + Clear for thick dimensional effects such as embossing. Clear ink can be layered into both gloss and matte finishes including 72 ready-to-apply patterns from the Roland Texture Library included in Roland’s VersaWorks RIP software.
Users of the LEC-540 can also take advantage of the Roland OnSupport system which allows remote monitoring of production activities.  When a job is completed or ink runs low, the printer will automatically send an e-mail notification to a smart phone or computer.  Unattended operation and easy maintenance are further ensured by an automated white ink circulation system that prevents pigments in the ink from settling, minimizes waste and ensures continuous uninterrupted printing. The LEC-540 is Roland Eco Label and Energy Star certified.
The LEC-540 is priced at $67,995. The VersaUV series also includes the 30” LEC-330 and 30” LEC-300A. VersaUV was introduced in 2008 as the world’s first UV-LED inkjet printer/cutter and has been recognized with prestigious DPI and EDP awards for outstanding innovation.

Vastex adds jig for printing
 numbers to 12 inches

A new DiGiT™ Model V2NS-12 clamp-on numbering system for rear-clamp manual screen printing presses with 2 or more stations, prints athletic numbers up to 12 inches in height, it was announced by Mark Vasilantone, president of Vastex of Allentown, PA.

The system consists of two sliding rail assemblies (secured by the rear clamps of a manual screen printing press) that hold two numbering screens, one burned with numbers 1-2-3-4-5, and the other with 6-7-8-9-0.

The rail assemblies have a roller bearing with detents and a yellow target arrow, allowing the operator to slide the screen left or right, and simply lower it to lock the desired number in place, ready to print.
The system features five detent positions for each number, enabling the operator to fully compensate for the thinner number “1” in two ways: first, by removing excess space between the thinner number “1” and the adjacent number, and second, by centering the resulting two-digit number on the shirt, all in about five seconds according to Vasilantone.
The two-station system, which fits virtually any rear clamp manual press, accommodates a pair of 23 x 47 in. screens containing one set of 12 or 10 in. numbers, 23 x 38 in. screens containing one set of or 8 in. numbers, or 23 x 31 in. screens containing one combination set of 6 and 4 in. numbers.
An additional set of rail assemblies can be added to two additional stations to print number outlines in a second color.
According to the company, one operator can print up to 60, 2-digit shirts per hour in one color, or up to 40 in two colors. Two operators can print up to 120, 2-digit shirts per hour in one color, or up to 60 in two colors.
The sliding screens can also be used for printing of other variable graphics such as team names, sponsor names and chest images, while press stations not being used for variable printing can be used with regular screens in normal fashion, or as loading/unloading stations.
In addition to DiGiT rail assemblies, the company offers exposed screens, blank screens and film positives. "Because numbers 0 through 9 are divided between two screens of standard sizes, shops can save money by exposing their own screens using positives available from Vastex," says Vasilantone.
V2NS-12 system rail assemblies, numbering screens, screen positives, squeegees and squeegee rest tubes can be purchased as components, or as complete packages starting at $2200 with numbering screens and $895 without. All are shippable via UPS. Also offered is a V2NS-8 system for printing numbers up to 8 in.

The company also manufactures manual screen printing presses, infrared conveyor dryers, flash cure units, screen exposing units, screen drying cabinets, screen registration systems, washout booths, heat presses, and complete screen printing shop systems. INSTANT INFO

Hirsch offers video on how to
 digitally print a button-down jersey

Watch a demonstration of how to digitally print on a full button-down or split-front jersey with a Mimaki GP 604, which is distributed by Hirsch International of Hauppauge, NY. This educational presentation shows how to load the jersey on the dual platen system as well as how to set the height adjustment. A laser shoots across the platens from one electronic eye to another to tell the printer how to adjust the height.
As the printer is working, you can see how the design is laid down on the shirt. The inkjet head prints right over buttons with no loss of registration or detail. This 5-minute video allows you to see how any style of shirt with buttons down the center can be easily decorated without any of the hassle involved with screen printing or embroidery.

Cotswold offers new Press
 N Wash hoopless stabilizer

Press & Wash, a new product offered by Cotswold Industries of New York, NY, is a fibrous water-soluble stabilizer that is specifically designed for embroidery applications where you do not want any remnants to be visible. It is ideal for making freestanding lace and appliqués as well as embroidering on items such as blankets, fabric scarves, or napkins where both sides of the product are visible.
Press & Wash works better than films because its fibers wrap around the fabric’s threads to provide firm, long-lasting support. The entire product does not completely dissolve as a film does, yet it is not visible. It not only supports the embroidery against wear and tear but improves registration. Excess stabilizer rinses away easily and cleanly with no messy residue.
Press & Wash supports freestanding lace with only one layer and it is ideal for delicate fabrics such as silk and organza. Because of its pressure-adhesive backing, it also is designed to work in hoopless applications. It can be used for baby socks, ties, straps, or anything that cannot be hooped in a traditional manner. The more often the stabilizer is washed, the softer it gets so if a stiffer support is desired, it can be washed less often or less vigorously and more support will remain.
Press & Wash comes in a range of the most popular widths and lengths. In a 20-inch width, it is available in 20 yards, 50 yards, and 100 yards; in a 40-inch width, it comes in 20 yards, 50 yards, and 100 yards. Custom cutting of any Cotswold stabilizer is available upon request.

Universal Laser awarded US
Patent for Class 1 to Class 4
 Conversion on Pass-Through Option

Universal Laser Systems, Inc. (ULS), a leading manufacturer of CO2 lasers and laser systems, announced it has been awarded U.S. Patent No. 7,723,638 for its Pass-Through option on the Industrial Laser Series (ILS) line of laser engraving and cutting solutions. The pass-through option on the ILS allows for CDRH compliant conversion of the laser system from a Class 1 laser system to a Class 4 laser system.

The Pass-Through option on the ILS includes a Class 4 Module that allows for CDRH-compliant switching between CDRH Class 1 to CDRH Class 4 mode to accommodate oversize work pieces. The quick attach/disconnect design includes key switch, emissions indicator, safety delay, shutter and remote interlock support.  This option converts a Class 1 ILS laser system into a properly configured Class 4 laser system.  Special precautions are required, such as wearing laser safety glasses, since Class 4 operation has the potential to expose users to invisible laser radiation.
“We are very excited to have been awarded this patent that recognizes the importance of safely converting an enclosed Class 1 laser system into a Class 4 laser system,” said Chris Risser, Engineer and Systems Product Development Manager for Universal Laser Systems.  “Universal has invested years of resources in developing innovative, safe and technologically advanced products and options for our systems that benefit the customer and offer capabilities not available elsewhere.”
Universal’s Industrial Laser Series with the pass-through option installed allows for cutting and engraving of oversize materials, such as golf clubs, surfboards, cabinets and many other products that aren’t capable of being processed on standard laser system tables. The pass-through option also makes the ILS production-line ready.

Hirsch offers new oversize
 embroidery hoop for Tajima machines

At the end of August, Tajima, distributed by Hirsch International of Hauppauge, NY, is releasing a new larger embroidery hoop that is intended to make it easier to produce today’s popular oversize designs. This hoop will replace the previous largest Tajima hoop available. This new frame, TFA-510X450, is made of high impact plastic resin specifically designed to maintain dimensional integrity. It measures 18 inches wide by 20 inches long. It is ideal for doing a wide range of large items such as hockey jerseys, jacket backs, blankets, beach towels, banners, and tablecloths.
It has a diagonal distance of 23.5 inches compared to 18.5 inches on the former largest embroidery hoop. A longer length and open corners make this frame unique. Embroiderers can take better advantage of the full sewing field. This frame will work on Tajima models 1502/450, 1504/450, 1506/450, 1508/450, and TFMX-C1501(450X520)S. It works best with thicker fabrics. This larger embroidery frame can be purchased individually.
